Anti-Namakhvani HPP protesters block road in Kutaisi

Anti-Namakhvani HPP protesters blocked the road in the Gumathesi settlement in Kutaisi, western Georgia on Sunday.

The event resulted in the clash between the protesters and the law enforcement officers.

Anti-HPP protesters pledge to clear the road if the police let them in Namakhvani village to pick up their belongings and relocate their tents.

At the same time, law enforcers are removing protesters’ tents in the village of Namakhvani due to the expected water level rise near the village.

“To avoid danger and protect the protesters’ life and health, we decided to remove the tents from the danger zone (under Article 26, Paragraph II of the Law of Georgia on Police) and move the citizens to a safer area,” Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) stated earlier.

MIA calls on the protesters to obey the lawful request of the police.

Protests against the Namakhvani HPP construction in the Rioni Valley have been underway for months now. Anti-HPP activists are concerned about the HPP construction that could harm the environment.
