European Integration Chair: States have right to respond extremism through mask bans, law enforcement

“It is normal for states to respond to extremism and violence, including through measures such as banning masks or deploying law enforcement,” stated Levan Makhashvili, Chair of the Parliament’s European Integration Committee.

“What’s abnormal,” he noted, “is to incite violence and then criticize the state’s response with absurd statements.”

According to Makhashvili, it is regrettable when individuals fail to positively assess the state’s legal response or, worse, contribute to violence through silence or indirect support.

“They have no financial interest in commenting on events in the United States, and criticizing America would undermine their very existence. So, on one hand, they are afraid, and on the other, they have no incentive—because the projects they are involved in don’t concern the U.S.,” Makhashvili added.
