Journalists and various media outlet representatives from regions are holding a protest rally at a pre-trial detention facility in Batumi, demanding the release of Mzia Amaglobeli, the founder of the online publications ‘Netgazeti’ and ‘Batumelebi.’
According to the protesters, “Amaglobeli’s detention is indicative that the government is fighting against free speech.”
In their assessment, ‘Batumelebi’ is a publication that has been distinguished by its adherence to principles of objectivity and fairness, and for more than two decades, has managed to gain the highest authority, which is a serious discomfort for the government.”
“Mzia Amaglobeli’s detention means that tomorrow this system will arrest any decent person without needing to find any reason,” says Eter Turadze, editor-in-chief of ‘Batumelebi.’
The prosecutor’s office has charged Mzia Amaglobeli under Article 353 of the Criminal Code, which implies assault on a police officer. The court will discuss the preventive measures for the case tomorrow.
