Georgian journalist Mzia Amaglobeli, nominated by EPP, awarded 2025 Sakharov Prize
The European Parliament has awarded the 2025 Sakharov Prize to Mzia Amaglobeli and Andrzej Poczobut, Georgian and Belarusian journalists, respectively.
Mzia Amaglobeli, founder of Batumelebi and Netgazeti media outlets, was nominated for the Sakharov Prize by the European People’s Party (EPP).
The Sakharov Prize laureates were announced by Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament, at a plenary session.
“Both are journalists, currently in prison on trumped-up charges, simply for doing their work and for speaking out about injustice. Their courage has made them symbols of the struggle for freedom and democracy. This house stands with them and with all those who continue to demand freedom,” said Roberta Metsola.
The 2025 Sakharov Prize laureates will be awarded at a ceremony on December 16. The prize is worth 50,000 euros.
The Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought was established in 1988 in honour of the Soviet scientist and dissident Andrei Sakharov.
The 2025 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought goes to Belarus’ Andrzej Poczobut and Georgia’s Mzia Amaglobeli.
The courage of these journalists in speaking out against injustice, even behind bars, stands as a powerful symbol of freedom and democracy.
