EP: Free, fair elections must take place. Until then, Parliament does not recognise Georgia’s current gov't

European Parliament [EP] says, “Georgia cannot join the EU until its government reverses its authoritarian course. The European Parliament stands with the Georgian people.”

“After decades of democratic progress, rigged elections last year were a clear turning point towards an authoritarian government in Georgia,” MEPs say.

“The ruling Georgian Dream party has illicitly captured state institutions, pushed repressive laws, cracked down on opposition, rejected EU integration and aligned with Russia.

Free and fair elections must take place, MEPs state. Until then, Parliament does not recognise Georgia’s current government and the country’s EU path is effectively suspended,” the EP declared.
