For Georgia's MP Sharashidze: GD's statement that EP's decision restricts free media is untrue; these TVs spread disinformation

“If all three media outlets were genuinely independent, we would support them; however, unfortunately, these outlets are party-affiliated television stations serving the government’s propaganda,” said MP Giorgi Sharashidze, a member of the Gakharia for Georgia party, speaking to GPB First Channel.

Sharashidze was asked about the European Parliament’s decision to suspend the accreditation of the TV channels Imedi, Rustavi 2, and PosTV for one year.

“It is not true that the European Parliament’s decision is detrimental or restricts the activities of free media. These television stations do not promote the truth and are spreading disinformation, especially regarding Georgia’s European future. When it comes to free media, any restrictions are unacceptable. However, these broadcasters are spreading lies and disinformation. First and foremost, they should become truly independent and serve the truth. Ultimately, no one should interfere in the media because it is untouchable,” Sharashidze emphasised.
