PM: March 31 marks referendum on state independence, today Georgia's independence and sovereignty are stronger than ever

“March 31, 1991, was a historic day for Georgia, marking the referendum on the restoration of state independence. Today, the first President of Georgia, Zviad Gamsakhurdia, the key figure behind the referendum and the Declaration of Independence, would have turned 86,” Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze stated at a Cabinet meeting.

“March 31 is a significant day in Georgia’s history. The 1991 referendum, in which over 90% of voters participated and more than 99% supported independence, demonstrated the unity of the Georgian people around this idea. Just days later, on April 9, Georgia declared its independence.

Today, the first President of Georgia, Zviad Gamsakhurdia, the key figure behind the referendum and the Declaration of Independence, would have turned 86. We honour his memory,” Kobakhidze noted.

Reflecting on Georgia’s post-independence journey, the Prime Minister highlighted the challenges the country has faced, including four wars, two revolutions, and severe economic crises.

“These years have been challenging for our country. Since 1991, we have endured four wars, two revolutions, economic crises, and other hardships. Yet, Georgia has not only preserved its independence but strengthened it. Independence demands constant vigilance, and today, we can confidently say that Georgia is more independent and sovereign than ever. It is our duty to safeguard this achievement.

On this day, we must honour those who made the ultimate sacrifice for Georgia’s independence—our fallen soldiers. Their courage and dedication must never be forgotten. I congratulate every citizen on this occasion and wish for the continued strengthening of Georgia’s independence and unity,” he concluded.
