Working group to be established on medicines for children with Duchenne muscular dystrophy
“A working group comprising representatives from the Ministry of Health and parents of affected children is to be established to actively address the provision of specific medications for children diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy,” Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said, following a meeting with the parents of children suffering from Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD).
According to Kobakhidze, parents will be kept regularly informed of developments throughout the process.
“Today marked the second meeting with parents of children living with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. At today’s meeting, we agreed to establish a joint working group of health ministry officials and parents, tasked with securing the necessary medications for the children. We have, in other words, reached agreement on the particular medications that will form the basis of our procurement efforts. The final decision on purchasing these medications will depend on several factors, particularly the terms offered by the pharmaceutical companies. A dedicated working group will be established to drive this process forward, and we will ensure parents are kept informed of our progress on an ongoing basis.
We have agreed on the specific medications, which, for certain reasons, we are not naming at this stage; however, all the parents involved will be kept fully informed. I wish to express my sincere gratitude to every parent who took part in today’s meeting, as well as to all parents, for their constructive and collaborative approach. I would also like to thank the Minister of Health of Georgia and the relevant staff of the Ministry for their thorough and dedicated work on this issue. We are hopeful that today’s decision will lay the strongest possible foundation for safeguarding and realising the interests of these children,” said Irakli Kobakhidze.
