EU Integration Committee Chair: They should publicly declare opposition to U.S. on peace opportunities
“We have engaged with the new administration on numerous occasions – the objective of both nations is to leverage the new opportunities forged by peace for mutual benefit. If they disagree with the desires and interests of the new administration, they should also publicly state it,” Levan Makhashvili, Chairman of the Parliament’s European Integration Committee, commented on the MEGOBARI Act currently under discussion in the U.S. House of Representatives.
According to Makhashvili, the policy of the Georgian Dream government is to preserve peace within the country.
“We have repeatedly explained to these congressmen the aim of our policy. The aim is to uphold peace in the country. Their approach is akin to the saying, ‘Nature is stronger than nurture.‘ They persist in the same behaviour. The rhetoric of this act suggests the country will face significant risks in terms of economic or military confrontation. Despite this, they stubbornly and tenaciously continue their course. Therefore, ultimately, our policy and theirs are clearly distinct. Our policy is to maintain peace in this country, whereas their desire and policy are dictated by what they were instructed and compensated to do.
With the “Agents Act,” it will soon become evident that their policy is to instigate chaos and confrontation. Thus, let them proceed as they wish. Incidentally, we have discussed this extensively with the new administration – the objective of both nations is to capitalize on the new opportunities created by peace for mutual benefit. If they oppose the wishes and interests of the new administration, they should also publicly declare this,” Levan Makhashvili stated.
The US House of Representatives is discussing the MEGOBARI Act today.
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee supported the Mobilizing and Enhancing Georgia’s Options for Building Accountability, Resilience, and Independence Act (MEGOBARI Act) on March 27.
The document provides for sanctions and visa restrictions against high-ranking Georgian officials. Specifically, it includes the following provisions: to initiate a complete review of U.S.-Georgia relations, including all assistance programs; to recognize the Georgian people’s support for the commitment to Euro-Atlantic integration processes enshrined in the country’s constitution; requires the U.S. President to impose sanctions on the Georgian Dream officials and their facilitators who were involved in corruption to divert Georgia from the path of Euro-Atlantic integration, undermined Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, or were involved in other corrupt acts that harm Georgia’s stability; will strengthen people-to-people connections and defense cooperation when Georgia once again acts according to its own constitutional requirements; expresses support for Georgia’s full sovereignty and territorial integrity under the conditions of Russia’s illegal occupation; will support civil society that protects the Georgian people and the Constitution of Georgia from the abuse of power by the Georgian Dream government.
