EU Integration Committee Chair deems CoE Congress resolution as unacceptable
“The comments and spirit of the resolution adopted by the Council of Europe Congress are unacceptable,” said Levan Makhashvili, Chair of the European Integration Committee, regarding the Council of Europe Congress’s resolution on Georgia.
Makhashvili urged those claiming a deterioration of democracy in Georgia to review the investigative commission’s [parliamentary commission investigating government from 2003 to 2012] sessions, where issues such as raids, torture, prison abuse, state capture, and racketeering were discussed.
“We witnessed violence in front of the parliament. In the U.S., throwing a Molotov cocktail is considered domestic terrorism, yet some portray similar actions in Georgia as peaceful demonstrations. Additionally, the Transparency Law is still misleadingly referred to as the Agents Law.
This law is, in fact, quite soft in terms of responsibility,” he stated.
Makhashvili emphasized that anyone questioning Georgia’s democratic state should examine the commission’s findings.
“I am ready to personally translate and explain them word for word. Those raising concerns should read, listen, and see the reality for themselves,” he concluded.
