UK appoints first female MI6 chief, Blaise Metreweli takes over in October
For the first time in history, the British intelligence service MI6 will be led by a woman. Blaise Metreweli, who has Georgian roots, will officially assume the role in October, succeeding current chief Richard Moore. She will become the 18th head of the organization.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the appointment historic, noting that Metreweli takes on the role at a time of growing threats to the United Kingdom.
“I look forward to continuing that work alongside the brave officers and agents of MI6 and our many international partners,” Metreweli said.
Metreweli has been with MI6 since 1999. She is currently Director General “Q” – head of the crucial technology and innovation division that aims to keep the identities of secret agents secret, and come up with new ways to evade adversaries.
