Tbilisi Mayor: Transparency is key, foreign interference unacceptable

Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze emphasized that no foreign actor has the right to interfere in Georgia’s internal political affairs or fund domestic politics, responding to reports by Sky News about the possible restriction of foreign donations to politicians and parties by the United Kingdom.

Kaladze noted that while the UK imposes similar rules within its own system, double standards are being applied when it comes to Georgia.

“We are talking about exactly such double standards: what is unacceptable for us is acceptable for them. When a foreign country finances your internal politics, this is unthinkable. Any self-respecting country will act, adopt laws, and make decisions to prevent this. No one has the right to interfere in your internal political activities, and even more so, finance politics from the outside. The financier protects his interests, and you must take those interests into account,” Kaladze said.

The mayor also defended Georgia’s Transparency Law as a necessary measure to ensure accountability in political funding.

“The adoption of the Transparency Law was necessary. It should be absolutely clear where funds come from, how they are used, and for which specific projects. Some oppose this because they prefer opacity, but we cannot allow it. We will always act in the best interests of Georgia, protecting our country’s future. Other countries do the same—they also prevent foreign interference in their internal political affairs,” Kaladze added.
