Prosecutor’s Office charges two people in Giga Avaliani case with instigating group bodily harm and failing to report offence

The Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia has charged Nia Imnadze with instigating group intentional grievous bodily harm and Anastasia Beruashvili with failing to report an exceptionally serious offence in connection with the Giga Avaliani criminal case, the Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement.

“An investigation conducted by the Ministry of Internal Affairs under the supervision of the Prosecutor’s Office established that in September 2025, Nia Imnadze began mathematics tutoring under Giga Avaliani. The accused, Nia Imnadze, told her friends Aleksandre Gabashvili and Giorgi Malania that her tutor, Giga Avaliani, was allegedly showing excessive attention towards her. Through these actions, the accused incited Aleksandre Gabashvili to attack Giga Avaliani alongside accomplices.

Aleksandre Gabashvili, together with Giorgi Rikadze, Giorgi Malania, and Demetre Chikovani, resolved to carry out this incitement. To this end, they established Giga Avaliani’s identity and inspected his social media profile, downloading a photograph to identify and memorise his visual appearance. They ascertained his work and residential addresses, studied his work schedule, and traced the route he took from work to home. Having selected the location to execute their intent, they commenced surveillance.

On the evening of September 29, 2025, Aleksandre Gabashvili, Giorgi Rikadze and Demetre Chikovani went to a training centre in Tbilisi’s Sea District seeking revenge. Although they set an ambush and prepared everything to carry out the attack, they failed to pull it off that day due to circumstances beyond their control.

On October 1, 2025, in accordance with the plan devised by Aleksandre Gabashvili, Giorgi Rikadze, and Demetre Chikovani, Gabashvili and Rikadze launched a group attack on Giga Avaliani, who sustained severe injuries and subsequently died in a medical facility on October 24, 2025. Immediately after committing the crime, Giorgi Rikadze contacted his friend Anastasia Beruashvili, informing her of the group assault on Giga Avaliani and the injuries inflicted upon him as a result of the offence. Despite knowing about the exceptionally serious crime committed against Giga Avaliani, Anastasia Beruashvili failed to report it to the police.

On August 5, following a motion by the prosecution, law enforcement officers arrested Nia Imnadze and Anastasia Beruashvili pursuant to a judicial warrant. Nia Imnadze was charged under Article 25 and Article 117, Part 3, Sub-clause (l) of the Criminal Code of Georgia (incitement to commit intentional grievous bodily harm as part of a group), which carries a penalty of up to 13 years’ imprisonment. Anastasia Beruashvili was charged under Article 376, Part 2 of the Criminal Code of Georgia (failure to report an exceptionally serious crime), which carries a penalty of up to 7 years’ imprisonment. The Prosecutor’s Office will apply to the court within the statutory deadline requesting custodial remand for the defendants.

For context, the court has already found Aleksandre Gabashvili, Giorgi Rikadze, and Demetre Chikovani guilty in the aforementioned criminal case. Giorgi Malania stands charged with aiding and abetting group intentional grievous bodily harm, and his case is currently undergoing trial on the merits. Additionally, Ani Naskidashvili has been convicted for failing to report an exceptionally serious crime,” the official statement reads.
