U.S. Embassy lifts security alert over Tbilisi shopping malls
The U.S. Embassy in Georgia has issued an update regarding the security alert from May 7, which warned of a potential explosive device at three shopping centers in Tbilisi. The Embassy has now lifted the alert.
“Subsequent to the Alert sent by the U.S. Embassy on May 7, Georgian law enforcement advised Embassy Tbilisi last night that no explosive devices were located at any of the three malls mentioned the Alert message. The Regional Security Office has lifted its recommendation that Embassy staff avoid those locations,” the Embassy stated.
The U.S. Embassy urges its citizens to monitor local media for updates and be aware of their surroundings.
To recall, the original alert was issued after the Embassy received information about a bomb threat targeting three Tbilisi shopping malls.
In response, the State Security Service of Georgia said its relevant units had determined the threat to be another false alarm.
The agency also called on diplomatic missions to respect the work of national security services and to avoid making public statements without proper coordination with relevant authorities.
