Lelo’s Gegelia: US sends clear message – democracy needs strong opposition in political institutions
“It is important that the United States places special emphasis on opposition participation and representation. The message is clear: a functioning democracy requires a strong opposition and its participation in political institutions,” Grigol Gegelia, a member of Strong Georgia – Lelo, said.
According to him, recent remarks by visiting U.S. State Department representatives demonstrate that the United States remains committed to a long-term strategic partnership with Georgia.
“The U.S. State Department’s statement confirms that the United States is not abandoning its long-term strategic partnership with Georgia and that our country remains an important area of interest for the U.S. It is important that Washington expresses readiness for a new phase in relations with Georgia, while at the same time clearly indicating that the full restoration of relations requires concrete steps,” he said.
Gegelia argued that the statement shows opportunities remain open for Georgia despite what he described as damage to relations with Western partners. He also emphasized the importance of opposition representation in political institutions.
“It is important that the United States places special emphasis on opposition participation and representation. The message is clear: a functioning democracy requires a strong opposition and its participation in political institutions. ‘Strong Georgia – Lelo’ has defended this position from the very beginning. Georgia’s European and Euro-Atlantic future requires engagement on all democratic fronts, including, first and foremost, through elections,” Gegelia stated.
His comments came after the U.S. Embassy in Georgia published remarks by visiting U.S. State Department representatives following meetings with opposition figures in Georgia. According to the statement, “A functional democracy requires a political opposition that engages with state institutions to represent the interests of the citizens who voted for it.”
