Speaker: We were disappointed over lack of American interest in Anaklia Port
“We should have been consulted about our disappointment at the absence of an American company interested in the Anaklia port,” stated Shalva Papuashvili, the Speaker of the Parliament of Georgia.
Papuashvili responded to Jeane Shaheen’s comment that the transfer of the Anaklia Deep Sea Port project to a Chinese company is a significant disappointment.
“This perspective is somewhat perplexing—neither you desire it for yourselves nor for anyone else. The fact is that no one obstructed American or any other companies from participating in the tender process. Last year, we held an open international tender in which anyone could take part. Those who participated were selected. Had the previous U.S. administration not been preoccupied with funding revolutions in Georgia, and instead directed those resources and energy towards economic cooperation and such projects, who knows—perhaps American companies would be interested today.
Unfortunately, I must reiterate that the strategic partnership from the American side has lacked genuine substance. For years, we have sought a free trade agreement, as well as visa-free travel and direct flights, which would foster economic relations. It has repeatedly been stated that we are not a large economy, but if there is political will, it is relatively easy to stimulate economic relations and attract American investments to Georgia.
Regrettably, instead of pursuing these initiatives, the previous administration focused on scheming, financing revolutions, and supporting senseless ideologies and LGBT propaganda. Senator Shaheen’s party and the prior administration squandered both the funds and energy of the American people in these endeavours.
Ultimately, we are left with reproachful remarks about the deterioration of business, a situation for which Shaheen and the previous administration bear responsibility,” concluded Shalva Papuashvili.
