Speaker on Danish Ambassador remarks: Countries using Police dogs against protesters should not lecture Georgia
“Denmark not only criticized us, but also spent money against the Georgian Dream during the pre-election campaign. At that time, the Danish ambassador to Georgia avoided speaking to the media and remained silent until a scandal erupted in the Danish media itself, after which the funding had to be stopped,” the Georgian Parliament Speaker, Shalva Papuashvili, stated.
According to Papuashvili, the controversy revealed that funds had allegedly been directed from one non-governmental organization to the opposition party Lelo for Georgia.
“As for the brutal actions of the police, this is not only in Denmark. We have seen similar footage from Berlin, Paris, and other capitals, where police violently disperse demonstrations. In Denmark, we saw the use of dogs and batons,” he said.
Papuashvili argued that Georgian authorities are often criticized more harshly than European governments for similar actions.
“The impression remains that in the European Union, dispersing critics with dogs and batons is considered acceptable behavior. They lecture us about human rights from a position of superiority, while using methods that, in our view, do not reflect Georgian values,” he stated.
He further added that countries where police dogs are used against demonstrators “should not make claims against Georgia” regarding human rights issues.
