Speaker: Georgia’s national interests encompass strengthening regional economic links

“We are continuing our bilateral meetings within the framework of the Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly in Tashkent, discussing important economic ties with the host country and regional representatives,” Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili told journalists in the capital of Uzbekistan.

According to Papuashvili, the top priority remains improving the well-being of the Georgian population.

“The Georgian parliamentary delegation is actively participating in the Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly. We attended the address by the President of Uzbekistan and held productive discussions with colleagues. Our bilateral meetings continue today and tomorrow, including talks with both EU representatives and the host country,” Papuashvili said.

He emphasized that discussions with EU parliamentarians focus on Georgia’s European integration and the challenges caused by the actions of certain European political groups.

“I believe our European colleagues clearly understand Georgia’s experience and aspirations,” he remarked.

“In meetings with representatives from the host country and the region, we are discussing key economic partnerships. Our main goal is to improve the population’s well-being. Economic development is a national interest, and we are leveraging all opportunities—including parliamentary diplomacy—to strengthen Georgia’s role as a bridge between Europe and Asia and as a major hub for cargo transit,” Papuashvili added.

The 150th Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly is being attended by delegates from 130 countries and around 2,000 participants.
