Speaker: Everyone now sees how right Georgian and Turkish positions were during Russia-Ukraine war

The Speaker of the Georgian Parliament, Shalva Papuashvili, stated that over the past three years of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, the correctness of the positions taken by the Georgian and Turkish governments has become evident. He made the statement during his visit to Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan.

Papuashvili held a meeting with the Speaker of the Turkish Parliament and the accompanying delegation.

“I’m pleased to have met him again—we’ve had similar meetings in the past. We discussed regional security and the prospects for a peaceful resolution to the Russia-Ukraine war, where Turkey plays a key role, given its experience and past involvement in mediation,” Papuashvili said.

He emphasized that both Georgia and Turkey took responsible positions by prioritizing their people and regional stability, choosing not to follow calls that could have led to further escalation.

“Today, this approach is widely recognized, including by the new U.S. administration. Everyone sees now how correct our stance was during these three years of war,” he added.

Papuashvili also noted that the meeting touched on bilateral relations.

“I will visit Turkey in June, where I’ll have the opportunity to further discuss parliamentary cooperation. The Speaker of the Turkish Parliament also highlighted efforts to establish a trilateral format involving the parliaments of Turkey, Georgia, and Azerbaijan. We already have similar cooperation at the level of foreign relations committees, and now there is mutual interest in elevating this to the parliamentary leadership level,” Papuashvili said.

The Georgian parliamentary delegation, led by Papuashvili, is attending the 150th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) from April 5–8 in Tashkent. During the visit, Papuashvili will address the Assembly and hold bilateral meetings with other parliamentary speakers.
