MP Matikashvili: Parliament functions fully within constitution; no apologies necessary for offended agents
“The Parliament is operating at full capacity, and any government derives its legitimacy from the will of the people—foreign powers have no role or influence here,” stated Davit Matikashvili, Chair of the Procedural Issues Committee of the Georgian Parliament.
Matikashvili asserted that the radical opposition’s attempts to fabricate a pseudo-reality—claiming that the legislative or executive branches were paralyzed—have failed.
“The opposition has ensnared itself in its own web of lies and now struggles to escape the disinformation labyrinth it has constructed with the aid of media under external control. They have repeatedly attempted to orchestrate conspiracies against the state. Following the parliamentary elections, the radical opposition planned to incite unrest by refusing to enter Parliament and by attempting to blackmail the Georgian people—actions designed to serve foreign actors and those who dictated their orders.
In the end, all their efforts have proved futile. Anyone who believes that refusing to take their seats could threaten the Georgian state is completely misguided. The Georgian Parliament, composed of elected representatives, continues to operate fully within the framework of the Constitution. If these agents are offended by the fact that they have caused no real harm to the country, then we have no reason to apologize to them,” Matikashvili concluded.
The Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili wrote on social media: “Six months have passed since the parliamentary elections of October 26, 2024. Contrary to the expectations of sceptics and critics, the 11th Parliament of Georgia is fully fulfilling its duties. The boycott declared by the radical opposition has harmed no one but the opposition itself, leading them to political irrelevance.”
