Gakharia for Georgia to table draft resolution calling for response to so-called treaty between Russia and Tskhinvali occupation regime
According to Shalva Kereselidze, Chairman of the Gakharia for Georgia parliamentary faction, the party will submit a draft resolution to Parliament calling for a response to the so-called treaty on the deepening of allied cooperation, signed on May 9 between the Russian Federation and the Tskhinvali occupation regime. The resolution will also address Russia’s broader annexationist policies.
Kereselidze stated that the Georgian Dream government is silent, and that under these circumstances, the Georgian Parliament remains the only forum in which a clear political and legal assessment of Russia’s annexationist policy can be rendered.
“The government is silent on the so-called treaty on the ‘deepening of allied interaction’ concluded between the Russian Federation and the Tskhinvali occupation regime, and on the annexationist policy it represents. Tomorrow is May 26, Georgia’s Independence Day, and it is a matter of deep regret that on this symbolic day, we are once again met with the government’s silence in the face of the annexation of our occupied territories. It is for this very reason that today, the Gakharia for Georgia party is tabling in Parliament a draft resolution calling for a response to the so-called treaty on the ‘deepening of allied interaction’, concluded this May 9 between the Russian Federation and the Tskhinvali occupation regime, and to the annexationist policy it embodies.
As you are aware, the so-called treaty concluded on May 9, 2026, represents yet another and exceptionally dangerous stage in Russia’s de facto annexation of the Tskhinvali region, a further act of aggression directed against Georgia’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and statehood. It provides for the full integration of the occupied region’s social, economic, transport, energy, defence, and foreign policy spheres into the Russian Federation. Most grave and alarming of all is the fact that the Georgian Dream government remains entirely silent on all of this.
Under these circumstances, the Georgian Parliament remains the only forum in which a clear political and legal assessment of Russia’s annexationist policy can be rendered. Georgian Dream still has the opportunity to act in defence of Georgia’s national interests. We therefore call upon the Georgian Parliament to end its silence and to support a resolution against the annexation of Georgian territories. We call upon the Georgian government to end its inaction, to restore active diplomatic relations and genuine cooperation with international partners, so that the issue of Georgia’s occupied territories remains permanently on the international agenda and our country does not face Russian aggression alone. Today, as Russia continues to seize Georgian territories, it is our duty to stand firm and principled in defence of our country’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. Congratulations on Georgia’s Independence Day,” Shalva Kereselidze declared.
