Parliament backs amendment for gradual rollout of new school textbooks
The Parliament of Georgia has adopted amendments to the “General Education Law,” paving the way for the gradual introduction of new school textbooks developed or approved by the Ministry of Education.
The bill was supported in its first reading by 77 votes and was presented under an accelerated procedure by Deputy Minister of Education, Science and Youth Tamar Makharashvili.
According to the legislation, the new textbooks will be gradually introduced during the 2026–2027 and 2027–2028 academic years, depending on grade levels and subjects.
From September 1, 2028, all general education institutions will be required to use only textbooks prepared by or agreed with the Ministry of Education, Science and Youth of Georgia Ministry of Education, Science and Youth of Georgia.
The transition will be implemented in phases, with full completion expected before the start of the 2028–2029 academic year.
