GD: We've signed document proposed under the aegis of President Michel, we call on opposition to put interests of country above everything else and sign the document

“We have already put our signature on the document proposed under the aegis of the EU and President Michel. It is now the turn of the opposition to do so,” the ruling Georgian Dream party has released a statement on Sunday.

Georgian Dream calls on the opposition to put the interests of the country above everything else.

“We wish to remind the society that since a portion of the opposition has refused to assume the mandate granted to them by the citizens of Georgia in the general elections held on October 31, 2020, President of the European Council Charles Michel has expressed readiness to get engaged in the mediation between the parties.

President Michel sent Christian Danielson as his envoy, who assessed the positions of the parties involved under the aegis of the European Union and drafted a document with an active engagement of US and EU ambassadors to Georgia to define terms and conditions of a fair agreement between the parties.

The Georgian Dream has signed the document by conceptualizing its responsibility assumed towards the country and in addition expressed its readiness to apply a principle of 40% of trust in the upcoming local elections.

The Georgian Dream has taken multiple steps as a significant compromise to reach an agreement. We have already put our signature on the document proposed under the aegis of the EU and President Michel. It is now the turn of the opposition to do so. We call on the opposition to put the interests of the country above everything else and to sign the referred document.

We once again remind our opponents that our country is facing serious challenges today. Georgia is fighting against the pandemic, as well as the economic and social problems stemming from the pandemic. Hard geopolitical situation has been created in the region.

At times like these, we believe that the entire country should be united around common challenges, while politicians should be working on the problems challenging the country and the society,” the statement reads.

The ruling Georgian Dream party publicly signed the compromise solution prepared by the European Council President Charles Michel’s personal envoy Christian Danielsson on April 16.

Georgian opposition parties that won seats in the Georgian Parliament of the 10th Convocation believe the 2020 parliamentary elections were a fraud. They have been demanding repeat parliamentary elections and the release of the United National Movement Chair, Nika Melia, and the co-founder of the TV channel Mtavari Arkhi Giorgi Rurua.

The second EU-mediated attempt to solve political crises in Georgia failed. EU mediator Christian Danielsson proposed a solution to political actors on March 31.
