Tbilisi Mayor: Georgian gov't ready for dialogue, lecturing unacceptable

“If we recall the years when we yielded to lecturing from external actors, it cost our country a lot,” said Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze.

According to Kaladze, Georgia is pressured when it makes decisions independently, including when adopting laws, which is part of this process.

“We are acting in the interests of our country. It is the direct obligation of the elected government to defend peace, families, children and not to allow innocent youngsters to be used for pursuing the interests of another bigger country,” he said.

Tbilisi Mayor noted that there is no answer to why the laws passed by the Georgian government contradict European democracy.

“Let us follow individually. Why has the draft law on transparency become a problem, why does it contradict European democracy? Why is the protection of family values a problem, and why does it contradict European integration? There is no answer to this. The main problem is that Georgia made decisions independently, and it defends its sovereignty and independence, and this is a regrettable reality,” he said.

Kakha Kaladze underscored that menacing and blackmailing are unacceptable.

“We have confirmed many times that we are ready for a dialogue, but lecturing Georgian people and the state is unacceptable. So what that we are a small country with a small economy. We are the nation of rich culture and traditions, and we are obliged to defend our country’s interests.

If we recall the years when we yielded to lecturing from external actors, it cost our country a lot, and we faced numerious problems. We, the elected government, have a great responsibility towards the population of our country. Accordingly, we must protect the country, families and the Georgian people with our policies,” he said.
