Georgian PM - Israel, Austria, neighbouring countries show interest in safe tourist corridors

“Georgia has the opportunity to re-open tourism gradually, first will be domestic tourism, then international. To join the European tourism market, we need to cooperate with you,” Giorgi Gakharia, Prime Minister of Georgia said at the video conference with Zurab Pololikashvili, Secretary-General of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) today.

Georgian PM pointed out that “tourism has been a driving force behind the Georgian economy in recent years.” PM noted that “the government is well aware of the level of global competition.”

“We understand that there is a risk of an epidemiological situation, therefore, the opening schedule will only work if we fully manage it.

We have more than a month to prepare the infrastructure for domestic tourism. We understand that the critical points are transport, airport, land border, hotel. We are waiting for your instructions on tourist-safe zones and tools and rules that should be followed.

Our embassies are already talking to the states about safe corridors. Israel and Austria already expressed interest. Neighbouring countries have interest for a long time as well. So, we want to cooperate in this direction,” said the Prime Minister of Georgia.

Georgia will host the ministerial of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) on the Future Prospects of Tourism Industry in September 2020. Ministers of Tourism from several dozens of countries will attend the event.
