GD Gen/Sec says consent of 27 EU states is needed to initiate visa liberalization revoke, fortunately, healthy politicians hardly embrace this shameful move

“Not only the cancellation of visa liberalization, but the process initiation requires the consent of 27 countries, fortunately, there are still healthy political forces that will not push such a shameful move,” said Kakha Kaladze, the Secretary General of the Georgian Dream (GD) party and Tbilisi Mayor.

With 425 votes in favour and 30 against, the European Parliament earlier today passed a joint resolution “On efforts to re-introduce the ‘Foreign Agents Law’ in Georgia and restrictions on civil society.”

The resolution calls on the Commission to promptly assess the impact of Georgia’s planned ‘foreign agent’ law on Georgia’s continuous fulfilment of the visa liberalisation benchmarks, in particular the fundamental rights benchmark, a crucial component of the EU visa liberalisation policy.

Kaladze believes the resolution “seeks to provoke unrest, confusion, and increase protests.” “A clear example of this is when the bankrupt opposition attempted to mislead the public by announcing the cancellation of visa-free travel shortly after the resolution was published.”

“Unfortunately, lobbyism and vicious relations have a foothold in European structures today. Such shameful resolutions, first and foremost, demean and harm the European institutions’ reputation. Yes, we need Europe, but Europe no less needs us, as we have extensive experience in fighting “agentocracy.”

In the recent past, we have freed the country from proxies run by external forces, and we will assist our European counterparts in succeeding and escaping agency rule, which undervalues European structures and the European idea. The government prioritizes Georgia’s sovereignty, peace, and well-being of every citizen!” Kaladze stated.
