UNM Chair: EP report contains no call for opposition to enter local elections
Tina Bokuchava, chairperson of the United National Movement (UNM), has said the European Parliament Foreign Affairs Committee report contains no call for the opposition to participate in local self-government elections.
Writing on social media, Bokuchava said the only call directed at the opposition in the report was for unity.
Bokuchava noted that, as an example of opposition unity, the European parliamentarians cite peaceful protest in the same paragraph and sentence.
“Therefore, if someone still wants to read a message between the lines, they should read this: a call for protest, not collaborationism,” she said.
Bokuchava emphasised that the same report calls for new, free parliamentary elections and, until these elections are scheduled, a tightening of sanctions policy.
“So the solution in this report is also parliamentary elections,” she wrote.
UNM Chair expressed hope that part of the opposition would not begin cultivating what she called a “Georgian Dream narrative” – suggesting the European Parliament is calling on the opposition to enter municipal elections.
“I hope no one becomes an instrument of Georgian Dream propaganda,” she concluded.
The statement comes after the European Parliament published a press release regarding its annual report on Georgia, saying “the upcoming municipal elections in 2025 are another test of the resilience of Georgia’s democracy and political pluralism. As a result, MEPs call on the country’s opposition to seize this opportunity to reflect the unity of the Georgian people in support of democracy and the rule of law, as already demonstrated by the peaceful protests that followed October’s elections.”
