Self-Government Committee Chair: EU bureaucracy's approach to Georgia 'utterly counterproductive'
“The policy of certain elements within the EU bureaucracy is absolutely counterproductive, both specifically towards Georgia and for the European Union in general,” declared Irakli Kadagishvili, the parliamentary Self-Government Committee Chair.
Kadagishvili commented on today’s statement by Kaja Kallas, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, who said, “We have put forward sanctions on those who are actually using violence against the peaceful protesters. So far we haven’t been able to convince two of the European countries to also agree to this, but we continue trying.”
“Remember the revealing statement from one of the European Commission’s experts about moving the battlefield to Georgia? This is exactly what’s happening. They see that Georgia doesn’t submit to the international radical liberal agenda and has shown such a degree of independence that it refused to fit into their grand geopolitical picture by not opening a “ring of fire” against Russia from the south.
Despite their undemocratic interference in the electoral campaign, the Georgian people chose the political force they preferred. Therefore, unable to achieve their anti-Georgian objectives, they’ve now switched to an act of revenge. Thankfully, some states won’t allow this revenge to materialize. Their statements have no other substance or objective basis,” Kadagishvili stated.
“When this building and police officers were being burned, not a single European leader dared to say that protests should be peaceful. They couldn’t dare to say this. On the contrary – we all know their language of encouragement: ‘We stand with the fighting Georgian people, go on, attack harder, raise the battle cry.’
The Georgian population understands what their statements mean. Yet when any foreign politician makes a statement or posts a tweet about elections in Germany or Romania, there’s an immediate uproar about interference in another country’s internal affairs. This double standard has become so blatant that it’s taking on a disgusting form, which is regrettable. This once again shows that the policy pursued by certain parts of EU bureaucracy is absolutely counterproductive – unequivocally for Georgia and the European Union in general,” stated Irakli Kadagishvili.
