PM Kobakhidze: Shift from American to European funding in ongoing processes requires attention
“We plan to initiate a draft law shortly that will further improve legislation on transparency and make an additional contribution to strengthening our sovereignty,” Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze told journalists in Dubai.
The Head of Government emphasized that it was “crucial” to engage in dialogue with partners, particularly American partners and the new U.S. administration.
“You can observe the processes that were previously accomplished with American funding are now being largely funded by Europe. This also needs attention. No one from European structures can support and finance revolutionary processes. We must also oppose this. We must thoroughly investigate the activities of the European Endowment for Democracy, which financed revolutionary movements and incited radicalism—this is totally unacceptable. Everyone, especially the European Union, must respect our independence and sovereignty,” said Irakli Kobakhidze.
The Prime Minister expressed satisfaction that the new U.S. administration is addressing issues that Georgia has raised over the past few years. According to him, USAID played a role in planning and executing revolutionary processes.
“USAID was involved in the planning and implementation of revolutionary processes. There is concrete evidence, including video footage. You may recall the Canvas training and various activities—this is all extremely unacceptable. It is very encouraging that the new U.S. administration has acknowledged this. The radical opposition and certain NGOs once claimed there was an ideal West that could never have negative intentions toward our country.
Today, representatives of Western institutions, particularly the new U.S. administration confirm what we have been stating—that there are malicious actions on the part of Western partners. Particularly, the new U.S. administration directly affirms that USAID conducted inappropriate processes in various countries, including Georgia. These were radical, revolutionary processes that involved interference in elections. I hope this will finally come to an end.
We have adopted the Law on Transparency of Foreign Influence, which will come into effect, be refined, and implemented in practice. This is the only guarantee that no one from the outside will ever dare to interfere in our internal affairs,” Kobakhidze said.
The Prime Minister underscored that the country’s security cannot be sustained without independence and sovereignty.
“We will protect our sovereignty, despite the resistance from radical opposition representatives. I recall the revolutionary attempt surrounding the Transparency Law last spring. We will oppose all such attempts to strengthen our country’s sovereignty, independence, and security,” the Prime Minister noted.
