Patriarchate responds to recent developments in Georgia

The Patriarchate of Georgia has issued a statement addressing recent events in the country, calling for restraint and mutual respect from all parties involved.

“We urge the government, law enforcement agencies, and all members of society actively expressing their protest to avoid aggressive actions, offensive behavior, and physical or verbal confrontations,” the statement reads.

Reflecting on the events of November 29 on Rustaveli Avenue in Tbilisi, the Patriarchate expressed deep concern and sorrow.

“Despite assurances from government representatives that Georgia remains committed to its European course and values, these explanations have failed to convince part of society. Consequently, a peaceful demonstration escalated into a physical confrontation between protesters and law enforcement officers.”

The statement highlighted footage showing protesters clashing with police, attempting to enter buildings, and damaging infrastructure, while also documenting aggressive actions by law enforcement, including physical abuse of protesters and journalists.

The Orthodox Church reiterated its call for calm and respect, emphasizing the importance of maintaining peace despite differing opinions and political views.

“We appeal to everyone to act with civility and refrain from causing harm over disagreements. Let us express our positions in a more civilized manner,” the statement concluded.
