Prosecutor's Office: One individual charged over hooliganism and criminal damage at Patriarchate residence; psychiatric examination ordered

The Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia has filed charges against an individual over acts of hooliganism and criminal damage at the Patriarchate’s residence.

According to the Prosecutor’s Office, an investigation conducted by the Ministry of Internal Affairs established that on May 20, 2026, the accused, motivated by religious intolerance, drove a vehicle onto the grounds of the Patriarchate residence, where he damaged a barrier gate, the entrance door, and a car parked in the courtyard.

“Following the damage to the vehicle, he proceeded to threaten those present in the courtyard, expressing open contempt for public order through menaces of violence and disrupting the public peace. As a result of the accused’s actions, the victims sustained material damages amounting to 9,350 lari.

Law enforcement officers apprehended the accused on the same day. He has been charged under Article 187, Part 1 of the Criminal Code of Georgia (wilful damage to another person’s property) and Article 239, Part 3 (hooliganism committed through the use of an object as a weapon), offences which carry a custodial sentence of up to seven years.

In the course of the ongoing criminal investigation, a psychiatric examination of the accused has been ordered,” the statement reads.

The Prosecutor’s Office will apply to the court within the statutory timeframe seeking remand in custody as the preventive measure to be imposed upon the accused.
