MEP Rasa Juknevičienė: Report on Georgia advocates for new elections, sanctions on regime, release of political prisoners, review of EU support
“The annual report on Georgia advocates for new fair elections, sanctions on the regime, demands the release of political prisoners and a review of the EU support,” said Rasa Juknevičienė, a member of the European Parliament, at the Foreign Relations Committee meeting.
According to the MEP, the European Parliament must assess Georgia’s huge decline from a democratic state.
“It is regrettable that in this annual report, the European Parliament must assess not the progress of Georgia as a candidate but the country’s huge decline from a democratic state, from a leader of the European partnership countries to a brutal autocracy.
This is an example of how a country can be taken over from within by a pro-Russian government without firing a shot. The rigged elections, the ruling party’s decision to block the EU, the arrest of journalists and opposition politicians, and attacks on the EU and its representatives are just some of the facts mentioned in the report.
The report advocates for new fair elections, sanctions on the regime, demands the release of political prisoners and a review of the EU support. On the one hand, the Georgian file is very tiring at the moment, but on the other hand, very motivating because of the European flags in the hands of people fighting for European Georgia for almost 200 days and because all pro-European political groups in the house are united. Many thanks to all the shadow rapporteurs for their excellent cooperation,” she said.
