MP Machavariani: Rasa Juknevičienė will have to explain her remarks on EU enlargement and war

“The Member of the European Parliament Rasa Juknevičienė will have to clarify her recent remarks if she truly meant that countries must play by the rules of war to join the European Union,” said Levan Machavariani, a member of Georgia’s parliamentary majority.

“She said something that is offensive to the European Union as an institution. This statement casts doubt on trust in and the reputation of the EU. If it turns out that Georgians have been misled for years, that is simply regrettable.

Her statement reminded me of Boris Johnson’s remarks regarding Ukraine’s accession to NATO, when he said that the issue had never actually been on the agenda. This was despite the fact that Ukraine had been promised accelerated accession to NATO, and that issue was considered one of the reasons behind the outbreak of the war,” Machavariani said.

For reference, Member of the European Parliament Rasa Juknevičienė recently stated: “Georgia is failing to seize the momentum created by the window of opportunity opened by the Ukrainians; before the 2022 war, no one was talking about enlargement.”
