MEP Juknevičienė: GD will not return to the European path, EU can impose sanctions and limit visa-free for those responsible
“The Georgia Dream will not return to the European path. This is the Kremlin’s proxy regime,” said MEP Rasa Juknevičienė during a meeting of the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET), where European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos presented the 2025 EU Enlargement Report.
According to Juknevičienė, Armenia is emerging as a leader of European aspirations in the South Caucasus, and the European Union should respond more boldly to its pro-European course.
“Several colleagues in the room participated in the EURONEST assembly session in Yerevan last week. It seems that Armenia is becoming a leader of European hope for the South Caucasus region, when Georgia looks like exactly what you just described. I want to invite you to respond even more boldly to the hands that Armenians are extending to us. We need to be realistic about Georgia. The Georgia Dream will not return to the European path. This is the Kremlin’s proxy regime. The measures we can take to help the people who have been fighting in the streets for European Georgia for almost a year are sanctions and restrictions on the free visa regime for everyone responsible, including to disinformation channels, one of which is still operating freely here.
Russia Today and Sputnik are banned, but the GD channel Imedi operates freely here, spreading hate speech against European politicians. I want to know about EU assistance to civil society because most organizations persecuted by the regime have not received any support so far,” Rasa Juknevičienė said.
