Major transportation junction being built near Laguna Vere at Heroes' Square
Road rehabilitation works have begun in the area adjacent to Laguna Vere at Heroes’ Square. The Tbilisi City Hall press service reported that the rehabilitation zone covers the road section from Heroes’ Square to Zviad Gamsakhurdia Embankment. City Hall notes that cable channels are currently being installed on the sidewalk, where overhead power lines will be relocated. Excavation work and underground utility rehabilitation have also begun.
Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze, along with Deputy Mayor Irakli Bendeliani, inspected the ongoing works.
“We have begun implementing another important infrastructure project in the city. This is the area adjacent to Laguna Vere, where road widening is taking place. This is one of the difficult matters, a transport junction in the capital, where movement was particularly challenging during peak hours. We had to purchase certain properties, including gas stations, and relocate the territory.
The work will take approximately two months. First, a drainage system is being installed. Cable channels and power transmission networks will be placed underground, and the infrastructure around Heroes’ Square will be completely organized. The problem that has existed on this particular road section for years will be resolved and, of course, vehicle movement will improve,” said Kakha Kaladze.
According to City Hall, the project will include the installation of safety islands, zebra crossings, and traffic lights.
“One traffic light will be installed at the intersection of Chabua Amirejibi Highway and Merab Kostava Street, while the second one will be placed right after the tunnel exit, which will help distribute and facilitate the uninterrupted movement of vehicles heading towards the embankment. The traffic light installation also allows for the possibility of creating a pedestrian crossing that will connect the area adjacent to the zoo with Varazi Valley. Additionally, outdoor lighting with LED lamps will be installed in the area, asphalt pavement will be laid, and the infrastructure will be adapted for persons with disabilities.”
The rehabilitation work is being carried out by the City Infrastructure Development Service of Tbilisi City Hall. Along with the Mayor, Giorgi Abutidze, Head of the City Infrastructure Development Service, Davit Kirkitadze, Mtatsminda District Governor, and Zurab Abashidze, the district’s majoritarian deputy, were present at the site, as Tbilisi City Hall’s press service reported.
