Tbilisi City Hall: Stages and other constructions banned near parliament on May 26

Tbilisi City Hall stated that several individuals had applied for permission to hold a rally and procession on May 26, after which the municipality sent an official response regarding the request.

According to the letter sent by City Hall, the installation of any structures, including stages, near the administrative building of the Parliament of Georgia will not be permitted on Independence Day due to official events planned in the capital.

The application reportedly concerned a protest rally and march planned from Ilia Chavchavadze Avenue through Petre Melikishvili and Shota Rustaveli avenues, ending near the Parliament building.

In its response, City Hall stated that traffic patterns across Tbilisi will be modified on May 26 because of official Independence Day events, affecting both public and private transportation and increasing traffic congestion on alternative routes.

“Based on the above, we consider the arrangement of any structures, including a stage, in the vicinity of the administrative building of the Parliament of Georgia to be inadmissible.

The placing of constructions on roadways along the proposed route would create additional disruption to traffic flow and is therefore considered unacceptable,” the letter states.

At the same time, City Hall indicated that organizers could submit a request for an alternative location, after which the matter could be discussed further.
