Economy Minister: We should start strategic cooperation with US from clean slate
“Georgia will soon have a US ambassador,” First Vice-Premier, Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Levan Davitashvili, said during his visit to the United States.
In an interview with Imedi TV, Davitashvili stated that the US government had ‘good perspectives’ on Georgia’s nominees. “Standard processes are in place, thus, this is not an issue that requires our intervention. This matter will be handled per protocol, and we will soon have an ambassador to the United States, which will undoubtedly boost bilateral ties.”
Davitashvili emphasised the need for ‘a fresh start’ in strategic cooperation between Georgia and the United States, citing the ‘challenging legacy’ of both governments. He believes the governments should restart strategic cooperation ‘from a clean slate.’
“Restoring strategic cooperation is, I believe, one of the most important tasks for both governments. We can bring many particular new directions to the table, which, of course, would benefit both nations,” he said.
Davitashvili also remarked on the US sanctions against Georgian officials, stating that they were “unjustified and that the situation should change.”
“At the State Department, we discussed the implementation of sanctions in general. Georgia is an exemplary country, a US partner in terms of implementing sanctions.
However, the sanctions imposed on some Georgian government officials were completely unjustified, and this should change.
We understand that the legacy for the Georgian government, as for the next administration, is challenging and time-consuming, but it is critical that we begin a discourse, which requires appropriate procedures even if there is political will.
Of course, we observed a willingness to cooperate and enhance strategic partnerships, which gives us optimism that we will expand and improve our relations with the United States even more,” Davitashvili remarked.
