Agriculture Minister: Promoting high-quality agricultural products remains top priority

Promoting the production of high-quality Georgian agricultural products is our top priority, and all state programs are designed with this goal in mind, said Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture Davit Songhulashvili.

According to the Minister, strengthening institutional capacity remains a key focus of the Ministry’s ongoing efforts.

“Meeting with farmers and entrepreneurs in the regions is a regular part of our work. Today, we visited several enterprises in Shida Kartli, including greenhouses and trout farms, all of which benefit from state support,” said Songhulashvili.

He emphasized the importance of developing the fisheries and aquaculture sectors, noting their significant potential.

“A Sustainable Aquaculture Development Strategy for 2024–2028 has been created, and the Ministry is now seeking private sector initiatives and investment to realize this potential,” Davit Songhulashvili stated.

The Minister also highlighted the greenhouse sector, which has long been supported by the state.

“Since 2024, the new ‘Georgian Vegetables from Greenhouses’ program has been active, already supporting 113 beneficiaries. Over 20 million GEL in loans have been issued to develop greenhouses across 23 hectares, with the state fully covering interest payments for 24 months,” he added.

During the visit, Minister Songhulashvili also met with staff from the Environmental Supervision Department, the National Food Agency, and the Forestry Agency’s regional offices. He was briefed on their current activities and challenges and visited the newly rehabilitated Shida Kartli Forestry Service office.
