Ex-President Zourabichvili: We advance toward elections and regime collapse

Former Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili has asserted that the country is progressing toward elections and an impending regime collapse, describing this as a challenging yet essential journey.

According to Zourabichvili, recent statements from international partners suggest that the opposition’s efforts to coordinate are beginning to bear fruit.

“Today, we discussed two critical topics. First, a new coordination initiative was established, led by the families of political prisoners. This structure appears to be solidifying. I wish to express my solidarity with the Resistance Platform, underscoring that its two primary objectives remain unchanged: preparing for free and transparent elections and securing the release of prisoners of conscience.

I must also emphasize that the issue of political prisoners, including instances of torture and ill-treatment, remains a pivotal topic in our discussions with foreign partners within this coordinated framework. This collective endeavour has already produced significant outcomes. Just yesterday, the ruling party faced a serious setback as strong international responses emerged. Notably, statements were made by Kaja Kallas and Marta Kos, while the bipartisan Helsinki Commission also weighed in.

Furthermore, the U.S. State Department spokesperson reiterated the actions the regime must undertake to improve relations with the United States, while new sanctions from the UK and the ODIHR’s statement on FARA have heightened the pressure. These five statements together constitute a formidable blow to the regime. Importantly, for the first time, the UK has imposed sanctions on members of the judiciary—specifically those guilty of unjustly imprisoning political prisoners.

These developments represent a significant advance toward victory. We are moving forward toward the elections and the eventual collapse of the regime. While this is a challenging and protracted journey, in our political vision, it remains the only path to success,” Zourabichvili stated.
