Pope Francis dies at 88

Pope Francis died on Easter Monday at the age of 88 at his residence in the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta, the Vatican disclosed in a statement.

Jorge Mario Bergoglio was elected head of the Catholic Church on March 13, 2013, following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI. He became the first Latin American pope and one of the oldest in the Church’s history.

Pope Francis had been admitted to Gemelli Hospital in Rome on February 14 with severe pneumonia. His condition fluctuated over the following weeks. He was discharged from the hospital after five weeks of treatment.
