Nika Melia sentenced to imprisonment on contempt of court charges

Coalition For Change leader Nika Melia has been sentenced to imprisonment as a preventive measure on charges of contempt of court for splashing water at Judge Irakli Shvangiradze during his May 30 hearing at Tbilisi City Court.

Prosecutors say Melia also ‘verbally insulted’ the judge after being removed from the courtroom.

Nika Melia himself did not attend today’s proceeding.

Melia was detained on 29 May under administrative procedures. At the court hearing held on 30 May, Nika Melia was expelled from the courtroom for splashing water at Judge. At the same hearing, Melia’s preventive measure was changed from bail to imprisonment.
