Coalition for Change's Butikashvili: Pro-western parties united on two demands, need agreement on rules
All pro-Western parties, along with civil society groups, are united around two main demands: the holding of free and fair elections and the release of political prisoners, said Giorgi Butikashvili, a member of the Coalition for Change.
According to him, there is also Salome Zourabichvili’s charter, on which agreement has been reached and a document has been signed, outlining what a strong, democratic, and European alternative to Georgian Dream should look like.
“Part of the agreement is that the opposition should present common candidates and a joint list. Consultations on this issue are ongoing, and based on Zourabichvili’s speech, this process is gaining momentum. Today, across the opposition spectrum, including the civil sector, our main task is to agree on the rules of the game and formalize them in a signed document. These rules may include a unified list, a common candidate for prime minister, and clear criteria for holding fair elections, should Georgian Dream announce them. There are already areas of agreement, but we need a written document that clearly defines the rules of the game,” said Giorgi Butikashvili.
According to him, the Georgian Charter outlines the overall strategy.
“The Georgian Charter defines the strategy, but we have not yet agreed on the rules of the game — how coordination will work among different groups, who has which role, who represents the opposition domestically and internationally, and how. We will discuss unity with all parties. We are in a major resistance. This is not a struggle over individual party lists for elections; it is a broader resistance. Anyone who has been on the streets for the past year is part of this resistance. We cannot forbid anyone from fighting or claim that they do not belong to this movement,” Butikashvili said.
According to him, the opposition is not uniting around Salome Zourabichvili.
“The opposition is not uniting around any individual; we are uniting around an idea and clear rules of the game. Ms. Salome Zourabichvili has her own important role on the international stage. At the level of international resolutions, she is recognized as the legitimate president, and therefore, represents the country abroad,” Giorgi Butikashvili stated.
