Khatia Dekanoidze: Current regime must be overthrown, institutions liberated from its control
Khatia Dekanoidze, a member of the Unity–National Movement party, addressed the media before a meeting of opposition representatives with Salome Zourabichvili at the Orbeliani Palace, stating that their demands align with the president’s position: holding new elections and releasing political prisoners.
“Our demand, like that of all protesters, coincides with the president’s stance – new elections and the release of political prisoners. While I do not hold positive expectations for dialogue, a political process and agreement on how elections should be conducted are crucial,” Dekanoidze remarked.
At the same time, Dekanoidze says that to hold fair elections, “this regime must be overthrown and all institutions liberated from its control.”
She stated that the outcome of the Georgian people’s protest is that the Georgian Dream government lacks legitimacy from the international community.
“I am uncertain about the structure of this council, but a political process is essential. Agreement and mechanisms for new elections are inevitable to overcome the political crisis. For free and fair elections to take place and for the Georgian people’s will to prevail, the current regime must be overthrown, and institutions liberated from its control,” she added.
Dekanoidze referenced a statement by President Zourabichvili, agreeing that hopes for dialogue are minimal, as the government has crossed all boundaries. However, she asserted, “The regime is collapsing, with their lack of legitimacy being the first significant crack. Bidzina Ivanishvili appears deeply concerned. I will hear everyone’s positions and provide a concrete statement afterwards,” she concluded.
