Georgian citizen Irakli Bebua, detained by the de facto authorities of occupied Abkhazia on September 30, 2020, is set to be released from prison on March 30, 2025, according to Echo of the Caucasus, citing the so-called Ministry of Internal Affairs.
Bebua was arrested on September 30, 2020, and charged with three offences: insulting state symbols, intentional destruction or damage to property with potentially serious consequences, and illegal storage of ammunition.
The so-called Gali City Court sentenced him to nine years in prison and imposed a fine.
Speaking to an Abkhazian Telegram channel, the de facto Minister of Internal Affairs, Robert Kiut, confirmed Bebua’s scheduled release.
“He was arrested on September 30, 2020, after burning the national flag and sentenced to nine years. However, his total time in detention was reduced to four years and six months. His term expires on March 30 and we will release him. There are no plans for early release—everything is proceeding as per the court’s ruling,” Robert Kiut said.
