Health Minister: Lung injury only, Rizhvadze receiving full medical care

Georgia’s Minister of Health, Mikheil Sarjveladze, stated that emergency measures were promptly implemented at the Sagarejo Clinic to stabilize Tornike Rizhvadze, former Chairman of the Government of Adjara, after he sustained a gunshot wound. A surgical operation was performed on-site, and his vital functions were successfully restored.

Rizhvadze was later transferred to the First University Clinic, where he remains in the intensive care unit.

“As you know, Mr. Tornike was admitted to the Sagarejo Clinic late at night with a serious gunshot injury. Emergency surgery was performed immediately, and his vital signs were stabilized. He was then transferred to the First University Clinic, where he is currently under intensive care,” said Sarjveladze.

The minister emphasized that all necessary medical and rehabilitation procedures are ongoing to save Rizhvadze’s life and support his recovery.

“This was a deeply disturbing and shocking incident. Fortunately, the injury is limited to a single gunshot wound, which affected only the lung and did not damage other vital organs. His condition remains serious and requires close monitoring and specialized treatment to minimize all potential risks,” Sarjveladze added.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs has launched an investigation under Article 115 of Georgia’s Criminal Code, which pertains to incitement to suicide. Intensive investigative activities are underway.

In a related development, Aleksi Akhvlediani, head of the Maritime Transport Agency, has been detained as a suspect in connection with the incident. Akhvlediani faces charges under Article 238 of Georgia’s Criminal Code, which pertains to the negligent possession of a firearm.

According to reports, the incident occurred at Akhvlediani’s residence.
