Health Minister dismisses 'alarming conclusions'; assures full medical treatment for injured Gori incident victim

Minister of Health Mikheil Sarjveladze has stated that Papuna Lochulashvili’s condition is under control and that, should the need arise, the patient will have access to every available service.

As the Minister noted, there are no grounds for drawing alarming conclusions.

“Every patient is a matter of particular attention, and this case is no different. Given certain factors, including personal data, there is a great deal I cannot speak to publicly, but I can tell you that everything is under control. There is absolutely no reason to draw alarming conclusions regarding his health. Since he himself wishes to undergo a course of treatment and observation, all of that will be provided in accordance with the needs of his condition. I believe that in the coming days, any questions regarding his health will be entirely resolved. Should any treatment prove necessary, every service will be made available. At this moment, no such necessity has been identified,” said Sarjveladze.

According to the Minister of Health, the incident was met with an immediate legal response, and everything has been brought properly into order.

“We must set aside entirely the speculative statements of the United National Movement from this discussion. Of all people, the United National Movement has absolutely no right to speak of systemic crime. They have no moral authority to do so, and society knows this, as do even their own supporters. Numerous assessments have been made regarding this incident, including by government, and everything has been called by its proper name. What we witnessed demanded a legal response. Everything has been brought into line with the principles of a genuine rule-of-law state; every violation must be met with an immediate, precise and specific response through legal instruments. This will naturally be assessed by the investigation and by the courts, and conclusions will be drawn. What matters above all is that every single process will proceed exactly within that framework,” said Sarjveladze.

Papuna Lochulashvili was taken to hospital by emergency medical services on May 28 following a deterioration in his health.

Lochulashvili sustained physical injuries in Gori. The Prosecutor’s Office has arrested six individuals on charges of exceeding official authority through the use of violence by police officers.
