PM Kobakhidze: U.S. President actively pursues closer ties and has visited China, yet his party members criticise Georgia for doing the same

“We are all well aware that double standards are entirely routine for those who criticise Georgia for its various steps and actions. The exact same applies to the case of China,” stated the Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Kobakhidze, during a press briefing at the Government Administration.

As Kobakhidze noted, the U.S. President himself speaks about the importance of deepening relations with China, yet members of his own political party concurrently criticise Georgia for doing the exact same thing.

“The American President himself not only speaks actively about deepening relations with China, but he also made a personal visit to the Chinese capital, met with the Chinese President, Xi Jinping, and spoke about the importance for America of deepening ties with China. This is the reality. Yet, imagine that at the very same time, members of his political party criticise Georgia for deepening our relations with the People’s Republic of China. It is a straightforward double standard and, frankly, it does not require a particularly profound analysis.

The same applies to the European Union. EU representatives frequently speak about the importance of deepening ties with China, yet they periodically turn around and criticise us for expanding our relations with Beijing,” the Prime Minister remarked.
