Health Committee Chair: Drug users number increased sharply, state declares war on drug-related crime

“The number of drug users has increased sharply both in Georgia and internationally, and synthetic drugs have entered the country,” Zaza Lominadze, Chairman of the Parliamentary Health Committee, told the GPB First Channel.

“We must understand once and for all that the state declares war on drug trafficking and drug-related crime. At the same time, we are ready to provide medical care and treatment to those struggling with addiction,” Lominadze said.

He noted that drug addiction is a disease that requires treatment, and while the state’s previous policy included liberal elements, it did not produce the desired results.

“Before the elections, we toured the entire country, and one of the main concerns raised was drug addiction. Drug distribution even involved drones and other modern technologies. The legislation against drug dealers has been tightened, and now the state must also take responsibility for treatment programs,” Lominadze added.

He cited an example from Kutaisi, where a rehabilitation program was relocated outside the city to ensure patient privacy and focus on their recovery. “Our priority is to care for their health,” he concluded.
