Girchi party sees no positive outcome for opposition without US, EU support

“The US ambassador does not support you, neither the EU ambassador. The European Parliament tells you to take up your seats. You can not gather people in the streets. What should we hope for?” Gichi member Iago Khvicha told TV Pirveli.

Iago Khvichia explained it was evident during the meetings with the ambassadors that they were not on the opposition’s side.

“Our position has always been to stay firmly at the negotiating table. We did not want anyone to criticize us. We did not want to lose the negotiations with the facilitators. Then we saw that the ambassadors did not support our stance. We saw it evident. Then the US ambassador came out and told us to enter the parliament,” Khvichia said.

“Suddenly, I noticed that some participants of the talks were not as interested in the opinion of the US Ambassador as I was. I am an activist not to offend the US ambassador, do not do anything wrong. It just is not a matter of interest. I blew up for the first time, as I do not want to confront the US embassy because of any opposition representative. It is the future of this country,” Iago Khvichia added.

Girchi representative also added that “there were constructive positions at the negotiating table not to offend the facilitators and be constructive.”

According to Khvichia, Badri Japaridze, Vashadze shared this approach, but the European Georgia thought differently. They believe the US administration will change, the stance will change, and soon the ambassador will start speaking differently.

“Imagine, you have a boycott, and the people you hope for, tell you that you have to enter the parliament. Instead of convincing them that they have the wrong information, they are missing something, and provide them with this missing information, you wait for their boss to change and give them a new directive. It was an unacceptable position for me from the very first day,” Iago Khvicha said.
