Three underage Georgian citizens, children of a woman, who is imposed life sentence for being a wife of a fighter of Islamic State in Iraq charged for terrorism, have been brought to Tbilisi.

Tea Tsulukiani, Justice Minister, her child, representatives of Foreign Ministry and family members met the children at the airport.

The tragic story of a 25-year Georgian woman became known to Georgian Justice Minister from Gia Tabatadze, Georgian Ambassador to Iraq one year ago. The husband of the Georgian woman is already dead.

“With the return of the Georgian woman, we made an example for many countries, whose citizens are serving prison term in Iraqi prisons,” Tsulukiani said.

Tsulukiani visited the Georgian woman in prison in 2018 and obtained the consent about the return of her children to Georgia.

The Georgian side reached an agreement with Iraqi authorities after long negotiations. UNICEF and Iraqi office of ICRC were involved in negotiations. The children will live with their grandmother and grandfather.
